Sydney Shakti Temple, Cultural and Educational Centre

Sydney Shakti Temple, Cultural and Educational Centre was inaugurated in Old Toongabbie in 2010, with a fully functional Hawan and Shiva temple area. It was founded by The Hindu Society of NSW. The core values of the Temple are in accordance with Hindu teachings.

The founders of Sydney Shakti Temple, Cultural and Educational Centre were originally Indian indentured labour immigrants to Fiji. Hailing from different areas of India, the different cultures of the immigrants fused to form a Fijian Indian culture, with influences from North and South India, as well as a number of other religions and customs. Gurukkul visited Fiji in the 1980s, and introduced new practices of worship to the community. Sydney Shakti Temple, Cultural and Educational Centre was an indirect result of this.

The Hindu Society of NSW was formed in the early 90s by a group of devoted Hindus who were keen to keep their traditions alive. They held monthly prayer services in Crestwood Community Centre. Soon, the attendance skyrocketed, and The Hindu Society felt the need to create a shelter that could accommodate the devotees.

The basic principle of the Temple is to give back to the community, by offering religious and educational services, and also raising awareness about issues impacting the society. It is thus not only a religious organisation, but also a community service organisation. They plan to use work with the local community to spread a positive message and bring about change.
